Board books and baby books are sturdy early books made for babies and toddlers who are just beginning to look, listen, touch, point, and turn pages. Their thick pages are easier for little hands to handle and more durable than regular paper books.
This group includes touch-and-feel books, high-contrast baby books, bedtime board books, and first word books. They work well for lap reading, bedtime routines, tummy-time viewing, first vocabulary practice, and gentle shared moments between babies, toddlers, parents, and caregivers.
Choose books that match the child’s age and stage. Check for torn pages, loose flaps, damaged bindings, peeling parts, small detachable pieces, or worn touch-and-feel areas. For babies, use books during supervised awake time and keep books out of sleep spaces unless they are specifically safe for that use.
Typically from birth to 3 years, depending on book type, page durability, sensory features, and the child’s stage. High-contrast books are especially useful for young babies, while first word books often suit older babies and toddlers.
